Friday, 11th Jun, 2010 Highfield Ladies head to London Rugby Rocks 7’s
Traditionally the summer period is the resting season for Highfield Ladies rugby. This year however, the team has added an extra date to the calendar by attending the Rugby Rocks 7’s Tournament taking place at Richmond RFC, London on June 12th.
Organised by former Highfield player Alison Donnelly, the tournament will see sixteen top women’s rugby sides battle it out for the inaugural Scrumqueens.com women’s 7s title. These include five teams from the RFUW Premier League from Wasps, Saracens, Worcester, Richmond and Bristol alongside other UK based club and social teams, with the Highfield Lollipops adding some international flavour.
The Lollipop 7s team is the more social persona of the Highfield Ladies Division 1 XV team who had yet another strong season in 09-10, reaching the AIL Division 1 semi-final and the Munster Cup final. Whilst the team is primarily taking a break from the more rigorous demands of the 15-a-side rugby schedule and with the emphasis on having fun, the Lollipops have nonetheless plenty of depth and talent to its squad.
The Highfield Ladies are veterans of the Heineken Kinsale 7’s tournament and the Lollipops once again put in an excellent performance this year losing out to the top-class Vixen’s team in the Saturday Ladies Final.
Whilst many of the squad have travelled abroad to compete as part of either their Munster provincial or Irish national duties, this is the first time that the Highfield Ladies as a unit have taken the initiative and are eagerly anticipating the chance to test out their skills against their UK counterparts.
The London Rugby Rock 7’s will also feature a men’s tournament with many of the elite UK sides competing for the National Sevens Series.
Highfield Ladies rugby will commence adult training (age 18 upwards) for the 2010-11 season on August 23rd. Highfield also caters for underage girls training (age 12 upwards) on Friday evenings from September. New players are always welcome. Further details are available on www.highfield-rugby.com.
